Eupatorium cannabinum L.

Hemp Agrimony

Hemp-agrimony is a tall, robust perennial of the daisy family, named for its hemp-like, three- to five-fingered leaves rather than any relation to true hemp. Stout, often reddish stems are topped in late summer by broad, frothy clusters of small dusky-pink to mauve flowerheads, giving a soft, hazy effect at the back of a planting.

About

Hemp-agrimony is a tall, robust perennial of the daisy family, named for its hemp-like, three- to five-fingered leaves rather than any relation to true hemp. Stout, often reddish stems are topped in late summer by broad, frothy clusters of small dusky-pink to mauve flowerheads, giving a soft, hazy effect at the back of a planting.

A British native, it is a plant of damp and wet ground, found along ditches, riverbanks, marshes, wet woodland edges and fens, usually in the lowlands, and it does best in moist, fertile soil in sun or light shade. It flowers from midsummer into early autumn and is one of the most valuable late-season nectar plants, famously alive with butterflies, bees and hoverflies. It suits wildlife borders, pond margins and damp meadow or wetland seed mixes.
