Austrian chamomile is a daisy-flowered annual to short-lived biennial in the same family as the true chamomiles, bearing white ray florets around a yellow central disc above finely divided, feathery foliage. It belongs to east-central and south-eastern Europe, Turkey and the Caucasus rather than to the British flora, and should be thought of as an attractive introduced cornfield-type annual rather than a native wildflower.

It belongs to east-central and south-eastern Europe, Turkey and the Caucasus rather than to the British flora, and should be thought of as an attractive introduced cornfield-type annual rather than a native wildflower.
In Britain it is a non-native (neophyte) that was barely recorded for much of the twentieth century, but it has spread markedly since around 2000 as a regular component of "cornfield annual" and wildflower seed mixtures sown on verges, amenity land and disturbed ground in towns and villages. It favours open, sunny, freshly disturbed or dumped soils. The cheerful summer flowers are useful to bees, hoverflies and other pollinators, and it earns its place as a quick-establishing annual for colourful mixes, though it is best chosen with its garden-origin status in mind.
