Coreopsis tinctoria Nutt.
Annual Coreopsis
Plains coreopsis, also called golden tickseed or calliopsis, is a slender, fast-growing annual of the daisy family with airy, branching stems and finely divided, almost thread-like foliage. Its small but profuse flowerheads are golden-yellow with a striking reddish-brown blotch at the base of each ray, giving the plant a warm, two-toned glow when in full bloom.

This is a North American species rather than a British wildflower, naturalised in places across Europe but best treated here as a cultivated garden annual. It thrives in full sun on light, well-drained soil, tolerates dry conditions once established, and flowers generously from summer into autumn, particularly if kept deadheaded. The open, accessible flowers are popular with bees and hoverflies, and its quick growth and long display make it a frequent component of annual cut-flower and pollinator seed mixes.
