This is a cultivated garden annual rather than a British wildflower, native to North Africa and the wider Mediterranean region, so it is best treated as a colourful border or container plant. It thrives in full sun on light, well-drained soil and flowers freely from summer into autumn, especially if spent blooms are removed. The open flowers are readily visited by bees and hoverflies, and it is a common ingredient of bright annual cut-flower and pollinator seed mixes.
