Clustered bellflower is a handsome native perennial of the bellflower family and the county flower of Rutland. Unlike many of its relatives, its deep violet-purple, upward-facing bell-shaped flowers are gathered into tight, dense clusters at the top of the stem, with a few more lower down.

Clustered bellflower is a handsome native perennial of the bellflower family and the county flower of Rutland. Unlike many of its relatives, its deep violet-purple, upward-facing bell-shaped flowers are gathered into tight, dense clusters at the top of the stem, with a few more lower down. Plants usually stand 30 to 50cm tall, occasionally more, with rough, oval to lance-shaped leaves, and flower through the height of summer from June to August.
It is a plant of chalk downland and limestone grassland, most frequent on the chalk of southern England and limestone country further north and east, and it sometimes grows on sea cliffs. It dislikes rich, heavy soils and strong competition, preferring thin, well-drained, base-rich ground in full sun. The richly coloured bells are a magnet for bees and bumblebees. It is an excellent choice for chalk and limestone meadow mixes, and equally at home in a sunny, free-draining border.
