False brome is a loosely tufted perennial grass native to Britain and widely across Europe, Asia and Africa. It forms soft, drooping clumps of broad, flat, bright green leaves that are noticeably hairy along the margins, giving the plant a slightly downy look. In summer it produces slender, nodding flower spikes, with the spikelets arranged alternately along an arching stem rather than spread into an open head.
It is above all a grass of shade, thriving in woodlands, along hedge banks, in scrubby margins and on shaded verges, and tolerating a range of soils from neutral to calcareous. Because it stays green well into autumn and copes with low light, it is useful for furnishing the ground layer of woodland-edge and shaded grassland plantings. It provides cover for ground-dwelling invertebrates and is a food plant for the caterpillars of several woodland butterflies and moths.
