It thrives in wet meadows, marshes, ditches, riverbanks, fen and the edges of damp woodland, sending up stout, often purple-flushed, hollow stems that can reach around 1.5 to 2 metres. The large, divided leaves have inflated sheathing bases, and the stems are topped by broad, domed umbels of tiny flowers in white to pink, opening from rounded, papery buds.
Flowering from July to September, it is one of the most valuable late-summer umbellifers for wildlife, its open flowerheads drawing crowds of bees, hoverflies, beetles and other insects to abundant nectar. It suits damp meadows, pond and stream margins, wildlife borders and naturalistic planting schemes, where it provides real architectural height and a long, insect-friendly season. Best on moist, fertile soils in sun or light shade.
