Preparation
Where there is a severe build-up of moss, remove as much as possible by physical means, or break up the surface, before treatment. Some mosses and lichens resist treatment because of their impervious surface. Abrading the growth first, for example with a stiff brush, improves the effect of the solution.
Application
| Growth rate | Dilution rate | Useable litres | Treated area |
| Normal growth | 1:19 | 100 | 500m2 |
| Heavy growth | 1:9 | 50 | 250m2 |
| Severe growth | 1:4 | 25 | 125m2 |
Read the product label before use.
Apply the diluted solution with a low pressure pneumatic sprayer for a coarse spray, or with a watering can fitted with a rose attachment. For small items such as gravestones, it can be applied by brush, provided the solution is flooded generously into inscriptions and other cavities. Always direct the spray away from the body and never spray directly overhead.
For the best result, apply N-virol Algae and Moss Killer when surfaces are reasonably dry and rain is not imminent, and work in wind free conditions to minimise spray drift. Once the initial application has killed the existing growth (2-7 days), the treated surface will not need washing. In cases of severe contamination, remove the dead material by brushing, washing or power spray, and a second coat may be necessary. Retreatment may be needed to prevent regrowth. Treatment life can be shortened by:
- Dense substrates that do not absorb the fluid
- Surfaces where dirt or leaves are allowed to accumulate
- Persistently damp areas
Internal treatments (mould control)
For interior work, remove traces of mould and algae by normal cleaning methods first, then apply N-virol Algae and Moss Killer. On relatively non-porous surfaces such as painted plaster or ceramic tiles, the application rate can be reduced and the solution applied with a fine mist spray. Mould colonies can damage underlying substrates such as paint and wallpaper, so remove any damaged decoration before treatment or before applying new coatings.
Finishing
Once the surface is dry, the decorative finish can be applied. Treated timber, such as decking, can be overcoated when dry with a range of decorative or protective paints. With some water based coatings, check a small area first to confirm compatibility.
